Improving air quality in Exeter: Engagement survey

We are developing a new Air Quality Strategy and Air Quality Action Plan for Exeter. These will set out how we manage and improve air quality in the city over the coming years. To help us with this, we are working with Ricardo, member of WSP, who bring over 60 years of specialist air quality expertise and support cities and governments to understand, manage and improve air quality.

Before we write the draft documents, we want to hear from people who live, work or spend time in Exeter. Your views will help us understand local experiences of air quality and what matters most to our communities.

Please take the time to complete a short survey that will take between 5-10 minutes

Why we’re asking for your views

Air quality refers to the condition of the air around us, including the levels of pollutants that can affect our health, wellbeing, and the environment. Poor air quality can have impacts on people’s respiratory and cardiovascular health and can also affect local communities and the natural environment.

Hearing from you now will help us:

  • Build a clear picture of how people understand air quality in Exeter
  • Identify key concerns or priorities
  • Shape the direction of the draft Strategy and Action Plan

This early engagement is an important first step and helps ensure that the Strategy and Action Plan are informed by a wide range of local perspectives.

How this fits into the wider work

This survey is part of the early engagement stage. No decisions have been made yet. What happens next?:

  • March 2026: Community survey (this engagement)
  • April – June 2026: Draft Air Quality Strategy and Air Quality Action Plan prepared, based on the information that you provide
  • Summer 2026: Formal public consultation, following Exeter City Council’s Consultation Charter
  • Autumn 2026: Final documents published, shaped by the consultation feedback.

How we’ll use your feedback

The feedback from this community survey will be used to:

  • Inform the development of the draft Air Quality Strategy and draft Air Quality Action Plan that will go out for formal consultation in Summer 2026
  • Help identify priority actions and focus areas
  • Ensure the Strategy reflects local needs and experiences.

Once the consultation closes after the summer of 2026, responses will be reviewed and shared with the Exeter City Council’s dedicated Air Quality Steering Group. The Final Air Quality Action Plan will include a Full Consultation Report as an annex.
